The Wastelands is a level found within the Shadow Wood, the second hub of Hexen. It is an arid and lifeless place, dredged by numerous mine-like tunnels. Large spike-like stalagmites erupt for the ground, impaling the unwary. Among the dust and rocks is also a small swamp with a small temple concealed within.

Despite indications to the contrary, there are few pitfalls here. However, this level presents a new lethal danger: spikes. These are sharp stakes that rise suddenly from the ground to impale any player or monster standing on them, causing them instant death. They are scattered across this map in open terrain, so you need to be careful when you're outside the tunnels.
The only way to detect the location of the spikes while they are retracted is by small patches of removed soil. There are usually multiple spikes in a given area that alternate, making it difficult to know where they all are. Fortunately, they follow a pattern: they rise and fall at regular intervals, and usually one at a time. If more than one spike comes out, they go up and down in unison. This means that if you see an elevated one, the surrounding area is temporarily safe. As stated above, they are only in open terrain, so you will be safe in passages and tunnels. They also make a very distinctive sound when moved. With a little knowledge, you can avoid this danger.
