The Phoenix Rod is a weapon used by Corvus in Heretic.
Overview[]
The Phoenix Rod fires single flame orbs at a slow rate (unlike the Hellstaff which fires multiple runes at a fast rate). Each orb deals a lot of damage, including splash damage, making it very useful at taking on groups of enemies, strong and weak. It is also an efficient way of dealing damage to the boss enemies Iron Liches and Maulotaurs, but not faster moving individual enemies, since the slow speed of the projectiles makes it easy to miss and flame orbs are a relatively scarce form of ammunition. It is even more important to avoid firing the Phoenix Rod at close range or in enclosed spaces, since the splash damage affects Corvus as well, and is more dangerous to him than the enemies' attacks.
When powered up with a Tome of Power, the Phoenix Rod instead expels an intense flame in front of Corvus, similarly to a flamethrower. Each flame orb will provide several seconds of this effect, but the player must hold down the fire button to maintain the burn. Though this attack has only melee range, it inflicts damage at an extremely high rate. Thus, it can be an effective combination with a Ring of Invulnerability or a useful offense against enemies which rush at Corvus.
